Griffiths’ letter regarding price differences between Canada and_ the USA does not even mention that essential item we _ all must have, t.e., food. Prior to 1979-80 food prices in Canada were con- siderably cheaper than in WV council recycling © commended Dear Editor: 1 would like to commend the WV Mayor and Council for their recent initiative in raising the level of commit- ment to recycling, as reported In a recent edition of your newspaper. West Vancouver has been in the leading edge of the recycling movement in the Province of British Col- umbia for some time, and it is encouraging to note the continued support of this concept by your community. There are two major ad- vantages to such a program. The more obvious one ts the reduction of the waste stream and the reclamation of usable materials. Less obvious, but of at least equal importance, is the conditioning influence on community psychology leading to a more responsible attitude to the use of the world’s resources. D.A.S. But recently | had a list of some food costs in British supermarkets and these forcibly reminded me of the incredible increase in the cost of living here. To think that in only four years this country, with its tons of home produce, relies so heavily on food imported from the US and further south where prices are so much cheaper than ours when buying retail, yet for some unknown reason, im- mediately they pass through the wholesalers and distributors and reach the retail counters, these prices are higher than in Britain---a country with a limited agricultural and horticultural production, and which relies on imported food to provide for its population. The price comparisons are as follows (with Canadian prices in brackets). The pound sterling prices have been converted at the current rate of one pound equals $1.60: Pork sausage $1.85 ($2.29), 2Ib white flour $0.38 ($1.47), 454g butter $0.80 ($2.69), 2lb soft margarine $1.06 ($2.89), white loaf $0.51 ($1.76), 2% milk $0.35 ($1.00), skimmed milk $0.34 ($0.96), potatoes $0.15 ($0.25). Obviously, this list is limited but it covers many of the normal range of items used in almost every household.
