But few people were expected to see the giant pieces of machinery rum- bling through the streets from Fell Avenue to the foot of Lions Gate Bridge for loading, since the exercise was due to occur from 3-5 a.m. The monstrosity taking over Fell and Pemberton Avenues and Marine Drive was a 675-ton coal stacker being moved in sections to be barged to the Coal Terminal at Roberts Bank. Built by Inlet Metal and Machining Co. Ltd., at 105 Fell Avenue, the reclaimer is the largest in western Canada and about twice the size of the one used at North Van's Neptune Terminals. The giant stacking machinery is designed to be able to load a 100,000-ton ore carrier within 24 hours. In order to move this kind of volume, the machinery is of phenomenal size. In addition to the- 675 tons of 1,°° 2 °° 9,295 of the enormous coal steel sections, being moved in pieces of 40-50 tons, the machine also utilizes a 260- ton concrete counter weight. Fully installed, the coal reclaimer will be 475 feet long and 125 feet high. The operator will be located at “wing the 80:0 slewhed of the machin. waiting for.it to be loaded and the end of a 200-ft. boom which can be raised or lowered 85 feet and turn 300 degrees on its own axis. The incredible loading, capacity is achieved by a bucket at the end of the boom which has a 30-ft. diameter and a_ loading capacity of 3,400 tons per hour. Inlet is hoping that the manufacturing job may lead to contracts for even larger Stackers during the next couple of years.
