By FAYE HUNTER - There’s a lot of talk these days about- buying antiques as an investment. That's in addition. to their value as furnishings. ~ Christian Jussel, owner. of Vernay. and Jussel of New York City, sees antique piec- ' eS aS more than an invest- ment. They are works of art | and can enhance any home's decor. Even beginning collectors can find good antique pieces once they know what to look for and where to look. According to Jussel, “The best thing to start out with is | anything oak — the.so-called country furniture. This is es- pecially true of English, fur- niture. But it‘also-holds true with American country fur- niture.” It turns out that country furniture is especially ap- propriate for the homes of today which are much smaller than those of our ancestors. The country furni- ture was-designed to fit into the smaller cottages of for- mer times. It’s much smaller than the finer an- tique furniture pietes. «. _There are three basic rules which Jussel advises his clients to follow when purchasing an antique piece: “Buy small, buy beautiful and buy the best that you can afford. “For instance,” he contin- ues, “in a cabinet, don’t go SUPERB CITY, HARBOUR AND MOUNTAIN VIEWS North Van's Newest Retail/Office Complex LONSDALE PLACE 1200 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver Retail Space from 1000 - 5000 sq ft. Then you are sure to be able to fit it into almost any home across the country. Homes have a standard 8- foot ceiling. You might find a bargain on a 9-foot-2-inch cabinet. But that’s because very few people can fit it _ into their houses.” His advice to stay away from the larger pieces holds if you are thinking of your antiques in terms of invest- oft: 984-9711 Res: 984-0995 2996 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver, V7N 3J5 Bs riot have much resale value. ‘you might be able to find _—— . ci9 : Sunday News, July 5, 1981 Loti me emake this _ thenew sign © _ in your life.” Over 240 ‘Sold? in 6 years. Although the strict defini- tion of an antique is anything over 100 years old, Jussel says you may be able to find antique storés which -deal with furniture made as late as the 1930s or 1940s. He says, “A lot of furni- ture made as genera) house furniture in the beginning of the century is fairly cheap. If you are living outside a metropolitan center, look at ~ country auctions, house sales and estate sales for good buys.” Jussel also believes that the East Coast is better fer the antique hunter. After all, it has been a population cen- ter for a longer time. In the growing parts of North America — Atlanta, Houston and the West Coast, in par- ticular — it’s a problem to find antiques.
