Barbara finds the students at Handsworth to be very positive. “My generation will be no problem. No twenty- year-olds will be offering me candy bars or money in the shopping centres, which does happen with older people,” she says. She feels the students are easily able to understand her handicap for what tt is -- a physical limitation. “So many of the older generation assume that because I'm 1n a wheelchair, I must also be mentally retarded. My friends never speak for me as though I'm not there, but older people do that a lot.” adds Barbara. Part of the com- munication problem, suggests Barbara, stems from a lack of eye contact. “People have to look down to see me. As a result, | am often ignored or just patted on the head,” she says.
