Andrew NicCredie Sports Editor andrew@nsnews.com NORTH Shore ath- letes continue to make their home province proud at the Canada Games in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland. Last weekend West Van goaltender Trevor Funk helped lead Team BC’s boys hockey team to a bronze medal, and this week a num- ber of North Shore female athletes won medals at the Games. North Van’s Flicka Gymnastics Club was well represented with three gvm- nasts on Team BC, which captured the silver medal fin- ishing close behind Quebec and ahead of Ontario. The Flicka gymnasts are Desiree Day, Natalie Balfour, of West Vancouver, and North Van's Breanne King. King also won the individ- ual competition to bring home the gold medal in dra- matic fashion by moving from sixth place overall to first in the final rotation of the com- etition. She also won two ronze medals (in the floor exercise and on bars) in the event finals. In the vault, King led the team with a solid pertor- mance earning an 8.85. King and Holmes cach had scores in the top three in par- allel bars and Noor exercise. “The silver medal was truly a team effort, with all of the gymnasts’ contributing to the team’s success in each of the four disciplines,” said Team BC coach Celestina Poppa Heading into the Canada Games, North Vancouver badminton player Anna Rice stated her goal at the Games was to “win every event ?’m in.” She came close, winning the gold medal in the women’s singles event and, teamed with Vancouver’s Ali Khan, the silver in women’s doubles. In the singles final Rice started our with a guick ran of points before the Ontario champion fought back and tied it at 10. Rice picked up her game at this point and never looked — backed, cun- ning the Ontario player cor- ner to corner until she even- tually ran out of gas. Rice won the second game easily for the women’s singles title. In the doubles’ final, Rice and Khan played a_ hard fought match but lost in two games to an Ontario team. Kathleen’s 35.33 score put her first overall in Level 3 as she was first in| beam, second in floor exercise, third in bars and fourth in vault. Rebecea topped the standings in Level 2 with a 34.50 score by placing second in three events and sixth in floor.
