NORTH ‘Vancouver
City council unani-
mously approved the
1998 revised budget
brought forward by
the city’s financial
planning department
on Nov. 23.

The city =— approved
$879,000 worth of funding
to 10 one-time projects,
including $50,000 to
upgrade the North
Vancouver cemetery on
Capilano Road, and $79,000
to upgrade the city cham-
ber’s audio and lighting sys-
tems,

The purpose of the revised
budget is to address major

changes that have occurred in
both revenues and expendi-
tures since the preparation of
the 1998 annual budget.

The $879,000 became
available, in part, because of
an $80,000 increase in busi-
ness licences and permits, and
a $425,000 increase in inter-
est. income duc to interest
rates being held within the
5% to 5.25% area tor most of
the year instead of falling as
had been predicted.

Coun, John Braithwaite
said council was pleasantly
surprised with the revised
budget.

“We (council) simply did-
n't anticipate the business
licence and interest rate
increases,” he said. “This
allows us to take advantage of
the opportunity to get going
on. projects such as the
Sunnie Park that's been wait-
ing for 20 vears (for renova-
tion).”

Braithwaite added that the
upgrade to the Capilano
Road cemetery had little to
do with earlier complaints by
