nis actions

MY regular readers
will recali my peri-
odic efforts to pub-
licly identify those
individuals who
through circum-
stance, career or
character are
today’s heroes.

Roil models for all te
look up to in this day and
age when heroes are alto-
gether too far and few
between.

In this week alone we
were shocked to witness a
Mountie shoi and killed in
the line of duty in Nova
Scotia.

We saw a gang of thugs
try to rip off several com-
puter businesses in
Richmond while wearing
masks and carrying guns.

We heard of the convic-
tion of a 17-year-cid in’ -
Coquitlam who brutally and
for no apparent reason,
stomped Graham Nivens to
death outside a convenience
store.

In what could well be
described as another wild
week in a world gone mad,
i had the occasion to wit-
ness the quiet and dramatic
effort of a quiet hero well
deserving of our attention.

Last Friday was the cul-
mination of a saga which
began on a crisp Ottawa
evening, last September, the
night Lions’ running back
Sean. Millington collapsed
on the turf of Lansdowne |
Park after a seemingiy
innocuous hit by defender
Remi Trude.

The hard hitting fullback
fell victim to what was
diagnosed as a torn patellar
tendon in his right knee.

If you can imagine his -
kneecap rolling up like a
window blind accideatly
released, you can begin to
understand the debilitating
nature of this type of injury.

Fraser University,
Millington was a star nun-
ning back on the football
team, _

_ But this is Canada and
our college stars aren’t
spoiled and pampered like
their American cousins. He
also had to spend his nights
dealing with drunks as a
bouncer in an.east
Vancouver Rhythm and
Blues nightciub just to
make financial ends meet.
