McCredie Sports Reporter WORLD CHAMPION speed climber Wade Stewert. When not competing at world- class logging shows, the tree topper can be spotted in local trees work- ing as the owner/operator of Eagle ‘Tree Service. The North Shore resi- dent is the current world champion in the 80-fl. speed climbing event and is ranked in the top five for log burling. ; “My dad (a three-time Canadian speed climbing champ) had me climbing stuff when T was three years old, and a year later I did my first exhibition shows,” says Stewert of his early beginnings. These travels with dad included exhibition stints at Klondike Days, the Calgary Stampede, the CNE and, of course, the logging shows at the PNE. “Just when my dad begin to retire from touring and competing I started to enter competitions myself, probably at the age of nine.” Stewert recalls. adding that while other kids his age were making money from paper routes, he pre- ferred climbing trees. These days he splits his time between the North Shore and Parksville, and spends most week- ends between June and September ‘climbing trees. For money and fun. MeCredi¢ Sports Reporter The men’s team swept the Sportsplex floor with Douglas College last Friday night, winning decisively 90-39, The Lady Blues were in a little tougher spot with Douglas earlier in the night, though the home-court proved the charm for Cap as they edged the third-place college 55-51. The following night, both Cap teams ran into strong ‘Trinity Western teams, as the men lost 79- 63, and the women 66-58. The weekend split of gumes put the men’s team in a three-way tic for third in BCCAA standings; a position the Lady Blues also find themselves in, With Christmas break upon the college, both Cap teams remain inactive for a couple of weeks.:- The men host the Christmas Crossover Classic on Wednesday, Dec. 21 and Thursday, Dec, 22, while the women take on Red Deer College at home on Thursday, Dec. 29.
