10 - Sunday, August 28, 1994 - North Shore News Warmth of Victorians touches N. Van cyclist From page 1 women’s teams have emerged neck and neck with men’s. The sport is seen as exciling and competitive — and worth sponsoring. As a mountain-biker, Sydor cur- rently competes with the support of Volvo Cannondale. Tomlinson rides with the blessing of Rocky Mountain. Both are aiming for the 1996 Olympics, where mountain- biking will be a full-medal sport for the first time. “It’s become a legitimate sport with a high competition base worldwide,” said Sydor. En royte to the Olympics, the women are competing at this week- cad'’s national championships in Rossland, and will compete next weekend in the finals for the world cup at Silver Star. Training for these competitions Jured them away from the festivities at the Commonwealth Games, where they spent a mere four days. The national cycling team decided not to participate in the opening ceremonies because their first race was slated for the next day and they had to conserve their energy. “We were definitely disappoint- ed,” said Tomlinson. “it was an all- or-nothing type thing.” Sydor previously got the chance to take part in the opening cere- monies in Auckland, N.Z., in 1990. She also competed in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, so she's got a pretty good feel for interna- tional sports competitions. To Sydor, the atmosphere in Victoria was impressive. The sense she took home from the Olympics was that competition was less important than commerce. “It’s there to sell things, to make money,” she said. “At the Commonwealth Games, the sports are more important than the selling of the games,” Sydor continued. ‘I'd definitely recom-. mend the Commonwealth Games to anyone as a goal to shoot for -- as a competitor, or anyone.” The women agree that the spirit of the games is more important Er ; yf CALL NOWIE /fe* (604) 681-4024 — a, <—s . in Classical Anizaation!" She said there were so many of thei that some were left with no other function but to greet the athletes and make them feel good. Sydor was touched by the warmth of Victorians in general. A former student at U.Vic, she suid cyclists are not ordinarily looked upon with favor by residents of the city. This time, she said, “Every- where we went and were wearing national team stuff people were honking and wishing us luck.” MAJOR PERSONAL INJURY.
