WORKING TOGETHER... THE CITY, THE COMMUNITY AND NORTH SHORE NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE BUILD FOR A BETTER FUTURE The City owned North Shore Neighbourhood House is currendly undergoing the last phase of a five year renovation plan that has cost the City one million dollars. This current phase has received $500,000 from the City, plus financial assistance from GO BC, North Shore Neighbourhood House and The Rotary Club of North Vancouver. As the architect for the project Dave Nichols aptly put it, “Trying to raise the funds has been a difficult problem for all concerned, but the big news is how the City and the community have aggressively worked together to bring this project to fruition.” Recently, Neighbourhood House and the President of The Rotary Club of North Vancouver, Neil MacDonald, presented Mayor Jack Loucks with a cheque for $35,000 ($10,000 from NSNU and $25,000 from the Rotary) to pus towards the City’s funding of the Third Phase of North Shore Neighbourhood House renovations, (Pictured lefe to right: Neil MacDonald, President of The Rotary Club of North Vancouver; Don Rutherford, Executive Director NSNH; Richard Kadulski, President, Board of Directors NSNH; Shannon Humphreys, Fundraising/Public Relations NSNH; Jack Loucks, Mayor, City of North Vancouver; Councillor Rod Clark, City of North Vancouver) HOW IT ALL BEGAN For over fifty years, North Shore Neighbourhood House has been a City landmark for community help and support. From social services such as outreach programs for pregnantand parenting teens, torecreational activities for seniorsand community day-care, its philosophy is to promote a feeling of community health and well being. The City strongly supports these goals and in 1986 Gerry Brewer, City Administrator, initiated a'study to look at the user groups and current uses of this community facility. The final report recommended a stepped renovation plan to redesign the program areas for optimum efficiency, plus improved parking and an upgrade for handicap access.
