Fashion in Action shows Kwantlen College design grads get exposure TWO NORTH Shore de- signers were among a group of Kwantlen College grads to show their fashions for Fall and Holiday °92 at the Vancouver Art Gallery Cafe recently. By Layne Christensen Fashion Reporter Clare McLaren, 21, and Judy Waddell, 28, both presented ele- gant, classic pieces to a sell-out crowd at the Sept. 26 Fashion in Action show, Fashion in Action is the name given to a group of 30 Kwantlen College Fashion Design and Clothing Technology graduates who promote members through fashion shows and other fashion- related events. McLaren’s line of funch-bunch suits in 100% wool novelty tweeds and solids were impressive. A cropped turquoise tweed jacket, nipped in at the waist, with wide rounded lapels and oversized covered buttons was paired with an above-the-knee straight skirt in solid turquoise. The young designer also showed the jacket and skirt in solid tur- quoise and the jacket in tweed paired with a wide-legged pant. Having just graduated from Kwantlen College’s Fashion Design and Clothing Technology program last May, McLaren is now working in a restaurant as a hostess. But her goal is to return to a career in fashion and work as a costume designer with North Shore Studios. Waddell, who graduated in '91, showed a line of evening wear in sophisticated black lycra jersey. A below-calf-length wrap dress with plunging neckline and thigh-high slit was secured at the waist by five elegant gold buttons. A black jersey halter dress which was laced up the back with black chiffon was also a standout. Waddell, who manages the children’s department at Bretton’s in Burnaby, said it’s difficult for young designers to find full-time employment in design. “Ie?s tough in the industry right now,’’ she said. ‘‘Thai's why it's good for us to get our fulfilment this way, through shows."’ And Fashion in Action was formed for this very reason — so ELEGANT EVENING wear by North Shore designer Judy Waddell was featured in the Fashion in recently. ¢ | designers like McLaren and Wad- dell could produce their own shows and market their fashions to their best advantage. The coordinator of the Kwantlen College fashion program said she’s thrilled at the success the group's had in mounting their own shows including four shows at the PNE (Pacific National Ex- hibition) last year. “I'm reatly pleased that they've stayed together,’’ said Mary Boni. “I brought them together but they did this alt on theis own.’”” More information about Fash- ion in Action can be obtained by calling 272-5480.
