Beauty on the beach AS THE dog days of summer continue and beach getaways are in the offing, many of us tend to want 2 vacation from our beauty regimens as well. But this is not a time for neglect, because relentless sun, heat and humidity are unkind to both hair and skin. Cindy Stokes, cosmetician at Shoppers Drug Mart in Capilano Mall, offers a number of around-the-clock beauty tips. @ Heed the warnings about the thinning ozone layer. Priors to sun exposure, apply a sunscreen. It’s the single most essential element in skin care. There’s a growing array of pro- ducts available, including Bain de Sofeil Sun Protector Face Creme, Hawaiian Tropic Ozone Plus Sun Block and Biotherm Total Sun Block. They ali have an SPF fac- tor of 15 or more and are reputed to be effective and long-lasting. @ Do a secret beauty treatment at the beach. Add a_ conditioner through the hair after a swim, then wrap a towcl around the head and let the sun’s heat bake in the conditioning benefits. @ Adjust makeup colors for the beach. Stick with coral or pink for nails and lips. @ Eye shadow, eyeliner and Mascara are notorious warm- weather streakers. As an_ alter- Native way to bring focus to the eyes, tint brows and lashes a cou- ple of shades darker. @ Hair removal is a major warm-weather concern. Among the array of depilatories are Nair Cream Hair Remover and Sally Hansen Hair Remover for face, body and bikini. Andrea has in- troduced a new line of waxing strips for face, bikini and legs that meets the standards of profes- sional salon products. @ After a day in the sun, parched skin will welcome a generous ap- plication of moisturizer or lotion. @A_ iight dusting of cooling talcum powder will keep feet dry and fragrant before slipping them into fashionable backless mules. @ Paring down makeup is same- thing most of us do naturally dur- ing warm weather, but we do like to look sun-kissed with a tawny glow of powder on cheeks, forehead and chin. Similar faux-tan effects can be achieved with tinted moisturizers. @ Lip gloss is staging a come- back, partly because it’s semi- transparent and also because it's a welcome departure from matte lipstick, which has a tendency to be drying. SWIMWEAR § CUSTOM-MADE TO FIT YOUR BODY Putting on the polish WEST VANCOUVER’S Decima Matet-Veale knows how to put on the polish and she wants to pass the information on. Malet-Veale, a teacher at the Canada Career Center in Surrey, has self-published a 488-page hard cover book on her specialty, image enhancement. “I took various lectures that Ive done on such things as how to get a job and prepare resumes and expanded a lot of other in- formation into a book,’ said Malet-Veale. Putting on the Polish (SBN 0-9695650-0-3) covers a wide range of topics including first im- pressions, grooming, developing an effective wardrobe as well as social etiquette and business eti- quette. There are seven sections on “the head hunter and you,’ **house grooming,’’ “*the teenager’s party,’’ ‘‘attending a funeral’’ and ‘‘common errors in speaking.’’ According to Malet-Veale, men and women putting on the polish should not raise their voices at the end of a sentence when not asking a question (dropping it gives a : Maternity | Fashion ~ CLEARANCE vr 10 70% ort ALL SPRING & SUMMER FASHIONS Allegra and Bundles Maternity Shops i 805 W. She suggests, to be in demand for a senior management job that pays $75,000 a year and up, people must develop su- perior abilities in their careers, write pieces for industry publica- tions, be guest speakers, and serve on the board of a community charity, among other things. Putting on the Polish is avail- able at $29.95, and Malet-Veale says the book will be sold at five Duthie’s locations and North Shore book stores including Amber Bockshop, Readers’ Retreat, Serenity Shop, and The Book Company.
