I do, however, have a concern that J feel should be Shared by all members of all Lower Maiiztand communities, particuiariy those which experi- ence higi: ozer:. readings. On May i7 Abbotsford hud an ozone reading of 42, which is in the high zerea of the ‘fair’ readings. The reading for the North Shore was 38, also an unacceptable reading. I suggest that the North Shore communities experience the same problem as the Fraser Valley — prevailing winds blow carbon- dioxide exhaust to our respective areas, and mountains refuse to let it go any further. Unfortunately, Mayor Campbell and Vancouver council appear to be uninterested in promoting tran- Lighten up on Collins, Mr. Schreck Open letter to North Van- couver-Lonsdale MLA David Schreck: So you think Doug Collins was politically incorrect for giving an opinion on the riots in L.A. and Toronto? When will you take off your blinkers, Mr. Schreck, and try to understand that Mr. Collins really does have a point. Because his views do not agree wtih yours or that of Mr. Allsopp does not give you the right to have his column removed from the North Shore News. There are many people who look forward to reading his views every week. He is the only person I know of who really has the courage of his con- victions. We totally agree with Mr. Col- lins that people of color are as racist (Or more so) than whites. Racism is a fact of life and has gone on since the beginning of mankind. For your information, I am also an immigrant of 35 years. It has always been iny belief that when one decides to live in another country, one must adopt the culture and ways of that country. How impertinent of me to try to change the Canadian people to my culture and complain every time someone says or does something | find offensive. Lighten up Mr. Schreck! Rac- ism is here to stay. By shoving it under the carpet you will only fan the flames of what is passive rac- ism into outright hatred. Mr. Collins’ very outspoken column gives us the balance we all need, to try and understand each other a little better. Vancouver does not share the same pollution problems as the rest of the Lower Mainland — ozone reading for the day I men- tioned remained in the ‘good” area for Vancouver proper. The Lower Mainland is the most popular area in Canada as far as immigration is concerned — 900 new residents are arriving each week. Conservatively, this means 300 more vehicles on our roadways each week — 15,000 a year. We need a comprehensive rapid transit plan. Please help in making the City of Vancouver realize that this is something that has to happen now. Regina Dalton Abbotsford Society thanks supporters Dear Editor: The results of the Canadian Cancer Society’s recent cam- paign for funds were very grat- ifying. Thanks to the many volunteers who gave so willing- ly of their time. A special thanks to the residents of West Vancouver and Lions Bay who donated so gencrously. This was my third year as campaign chairman and | feel very rewarded personally as these years have given me the opporiunity to meet so many great people — ail of us having one common cause and goal. Being an area chairman, a zone captain and a door-to-door Ans canvasser is not always an easy task and their efforts and dedication must be acknowl- edged, The generous donations of residents, whether in the form of time, talents or money, makes such a difference to so many cancer patients and their families. : Thank you all again, and remember the slogan, ‘*Together we can beat cancer.** Jim MacNaughton 1992 campaign chairman Canadian Cancer Society — West Vancouver unit LEE MEATS BONELESS CHICKEN BREASTS 5.39 Ib.
