Question: My husband and I have agreed on what might sound like a strange New Year's resolu- tion. For the past several years we've been having some serious conflicts in our marriage and in dealing with our children. We have decided to take a= step towards change, and feel that a program of counselling could be that first step. Our problems go quite deep; both my husband and I were abused as children and we fear that we are carrying destructive behaviors into our present family. We don't have a tot of money. How do we find a counsellor and one that won't cost too much? Answer: Congratulations on what has probably been a very difficult decision. The resolution to make changes int our lives takes courage . and determination. Although your counselling process will be challenging, your family will un- doubtedly reap benefits from the experience. Counselling is available in sev- eral forms. The choices include One-on-one counselling, involving just you and the counsellor; rela- tionship counselling where you and your partner attend sessions together, or group counselling in- velving other people with similar problems to yours. : Furthermore there aze the op- tions of seeing a private counsellor ar one employed by an agency. Generally speaking, those with an agency will be more affordable; however, some private practitioners offer reduced rates for iow-in- come clients.
