North Vancouver owner of The Right Image, shows an example of landscape work produced by Computer can peer into the future MOST OF us have dreamt of glimpsing the future now. While not quite at the level of time travel, computer imaging does manage to take us convincingly in- to the realm of concrete visuatizat- 10n. New Image Systems of Canada, a Canadian offshoot of Califor- nia-based New Image Industries Inc., is aggressively iaking com- puter-imaging technology to the consumer. And the applications according to Egon Frank, Western Canadian distributor for New !m- age Systems, are unlimited. Said Frank, who first connected with New Image 16 months ago, **J’ve been in computers for 22 years and I’m really +xcited about this. You say, ‘What if I wanted to do this?’ Now you can get a visual of it. It’s just mind-boggling, the possibilities.”” north shore high tech Michael Becker New Image is in the business of selling ‘‘systems.’’ While applica- tions vary, the system formula of- fers the client packaged high-tech razzle dazzle. For example, the New Image salon system ts the techno-answer to hair-style anxiety. The salon visitor’s head is cap- tured on screen and more than 200 hair-styling variables may be inter- changed via video. A touch of makeup here, a dab of coloring there and presto — a new top be- fore a single lock of hair has fallen to the floor. A chain of about 50 associated hair salons is planning to put systems in across the country, in- cluding several in the Lower Mainland. A number of indepen- dent salons already have the system running locally. Frank burns extra calories when he considers the weight-loss ap- plications for the technology. Pumped by New Image as ‘‘the most remarkable weight-loss mar- keting and sales tool ever created’’ the system automatically and pro- portionally reduces the video im- age of a client’s body shape to what it would look like at a desired weight. Said Frank, ‘‘They (Nutri/ System in Canada) haven’t made a commitment yet. But the weight loss system has been going really great guns in the States.”” Moving from scalp to mouth, dentists are biting for systems that show clients what their orthodontic work might look fike. The New Image dental syste also allows dentists to explore teeth by way of a miniature video cam- era. Explains Frank, ‘‘You know how the dentist usually !ooks in your mouth with a mirror? Well now he can use a real tiny televi- sion camera, freeze the image on a screen and blow it up. If he wants to examine a cavity he can do it quite easily. The thing is, what re- ally blows me away, is that this damn little camera is so small.”’ The other major system current- ly marketed by New Image is the design system. The system manipu- lates architectural and landscaping features and comes with a 32,000- color capability. North Vancouver resident Nor- man Cole bought into a design system last month. His home- based business, The Right Image, is focusing on computer imaging for landscaping, exterior and inte- tior architectural design. Said Cole, ‘‘We can use a cam- corder to modify existing struc- tures, If they have an elevation drawing we can photograph that and insert it on the site they are building on and then finish it by way of image manipulation. “*Before they even start to do any construction they’re going to know if it’s what they had in mind. That’s the key to this service. To give people a chance to see what something is going to look like. Between the landscapers and the contractors, nobody gets any sur- prises and everyone is satisfied.’’ Public Meeting The Vancouver Regional Transit Commission will be meeting at the West Vancouver Municipal Hall, 750 - 17th Street, West Vancouver, on Monday, June 11, 1990.
