Why should I put my child in a sefety seat? Besides protecting children from being hurled around inside a motor vehicle in the event of an accident, sudden swerve or stop, a safety seat prevents a child from falling out an open window or door. Restrained children are less likely to distract the driver, which can cause an accident. {n fact, most children are better behaved in a safety seat, because it improves their view out the windows. And since March {, 1985, if you do not restrain yourself and your children in motor vehicles, you are breaking the law. wat How can I tell if the seat I bought is safe? Look for the label on the seat that outlines the manu- facturer’s compliance with Canadian safety require- ments. An infant seat (for children under 20 pounds/ nine kg) manufactured be- fore 1982 should list ‘‘dy- namic testing’’ as one of its features. After 1982, the label should say that the seat meets Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213.1 (CMVSS) under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. For older children, weighing more than 20 pounds (nine kg), the label will state: “This product complies with applicable requirements of the Children’s Car Seats and Harnesses Regulations’’ or “this seat meets Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Stand- ard 213 (CMVSS) and the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.’’ eee Which is the best seat? The best seat is one that will be used properly every time the child rides. Shop around. Talk to friends. Choose a seat that fits your lifestyle and your vehi- cle, and use it exactly ac- cording to manufacturer’s specifications. . n“* Is it all right to use a good second hand seat? Yes, but check it over carefully. Try to locate the original owner and ask if the seat has ever been in an ac- cident. If you can’t find the model name on the seat, check with Transport Canada or the Consumers’ Association of Canada. You may have to write the manu- facturer to see whether the seat meets current safety standards. sat I have shoulder harnesses throughout my car and they cut into my child's face. What should I do? If the child is less than 50 pounds (23 kg), use only the lap portion of the belt and tuck the shoulder section behind the child’s back. When the child is over 50 pounds (23 kg), use the en- tire seat assembly. zat My child weighs less than what the manufacturer specifies, but seems too tall for the seat. Is it safe? A recommended height should aiso be included in the manufacturer's instruc- tions. If the child’s head comes over the back of the seat, then he or she is too tall for it. Use the lap belt. Seat the child in the middle position of the back seat. Fasten the lap belt low, on the hips, not over the ab- domen. ake Whet are some common mistakes to avoid when plac- ing my child in a safety seat? ® Don’t wrap an infant in a blanket before placing him or her in a safety seat. The blanket can interfere with the proper fit of the harness and leave the child improp- erly protected.
