Always doesn’t always work BUT REMAKE HAS ITS HOT SPOTS Always **% (Univeral) Rated Mature (at the Granville, Park & Tilford, Oakridge, Station Square, Scott, Coquitlam and Clearbrook Cinemas) veryone has a favorite film and Steven Speilberg’s is A Guy Named Joe, a Second World War fantasy with Spencer Tracy. This remake has been updated so that the only war reference is the B-52s used by forest fire fighters Pete Sandich (Richard Dreyfuss) and Al Yackey (john Goodman). Pete’s a hotshot pilot who takes all his risks flying the water bombers. When it comes to emo- tions, air traffic controller Dorinda Durston (Holly Hunter) can’t squeeze a single “I love you”’ out of him. Being airborne is his true passion. When she tells him her premonition that his number is up, Pete reluctantly agrees to settle down to a sedate life in Flat Rock, Colorado. Then the phone rings. Of course, the woman is always right and Pete earns his heavenly wings while saving his buddy. The next thing he knows, he’s walking through a scorched forest whistl- ing the theme to Leave it to Beaver. His guardian angel, Hap (Audrey Hepburn), tells him he has one more mission. He is to return to earth and help someone else become a pilot. TIM BELL film review What she doesn’t tell him is that his subject, Ted Baker (Brad Johnson), has a keen interest in Dorinda. “That's my girl, pal,’ he warns Ted, but to everyone, except the audience, Pete’s only a small voice in their minds. The film has several hurdles, especially in the first half hour. A choppy series of episodes meant to sketch out the characters’ rela- tionships offers little background to their histories and plenty of ap- gravation. Romance ts limited to Pete sur- prising Dorinda at a dance with a gift of ‘girl clothes’ while the band plays their song, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. ffi thet wasn’t enough, the local lugs (her words, not mine) stampede to wash their sooty hands so they can dance with the now beautiiully attired Dorinda. After Pete dies, things improve. Their romance takes on poignancy as an invisible Pete confesses his love to the grieving Dorinda or when he aches with jealousy over his flesh-and-blood rival. Hunter and Dreyfuss are natin the same league as Tracy and Hepburn, but there’s a touching scene where they slow dance together, al- though she thinks she’s alone. The exciting action scenes are flawlessly executed throughout, skilfully weaving miniatures and Automotive services and products are not available in the toilowing stores: Moose Jaw, Nanaimo Automotive products are available and tire and battery instalation can be arranged in the iJ following stores: Prince Albert, Kelawna, Vancouver Capuano.
