See-wah at Centennial Theatre

Bom in China, See-wah is a
gtaduate of the Shanghai Conser-
vatory of Music’s Department of
Ethnological Music, where

play the Zhejiang Zheng with fam-
ed zheng master Wang Xunzhi.

The zheng is an ancient Chinese
striag insirurnent which had its
heyday in the Tang and Song
dynasties. In China, there are dif-
ferent schools of zheng. music,
each characterized by its own mel-
ody and provincial flavor.

The Sept. 16 concert will feature
the application of two sets of
guzhengs: one tuned in the usual
pentatonic scale and the other with
accidentals — an unusual way of
performing on the instrument.

See-wah will play the Swan
Hunting, music which imitates the
condor’s attempt to hunt the swan.
Guest performer Ng Ngon-Pak will
accompany See-wah on the erhu, a
two-stringed fiddle.

See-wah has been 2 zheng soloist
with the Bejing Film Studio Or-
chestra, the Shanghai Orchestra
and the Bejing Chincse Opera and
Dance Theatre.

Prior to the concert, See-wah
will give a lecture and demonstra-
tion on the history and techniques
of the zheng on Wednesday, Sept.
13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Dr. Sun
Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden.
Admission is free.
