‘We've come a
long way!

Wm. John Irwin founded irwin &
Billings Co. Ltd. in 1906 in an of-
fice on Sth Street, just off
Lonsdale. A few years later it
moved to the Northeast corner of
Lonsdale & Esplanade, across
the street from what was then
called Burrard Dry Dock. W.J.
served a term as North Van-
couver’s second mayor around
1914 and was an alderman for ap-
proximately ten years. More
years went by and the office mov-
ed across Lonsdale and up half
a block. Sometime in the 1930s,
one of W.d.'s three sons, Wm. R.
Bruce trwin joined the firm to
work with his father. By 1950 W.J.
had retired and the reins of
management were held by Bruce
Irwin.

Sometime between 1950 and
W.J's death in 1958, Don Pollitt
joined Irwin & Billings to manage
the insurance portion of the
business. In the mid 1960s the of-
fice moved to its present location
at 1900 Lonsdale. When Bruce

Irwin died in 1971, the insurance
business passed out of the Irwin
family and was purchased by Don

Pollitt, with the reai estate business —

being bought by Anaka Realty. Don
retired around 1976 and soid Irwin
& Billings to Vincent Stewart &
Vincent of Vancouver, which was
owned by Harold J. Vincent and
Michae! C. Stewart. The new

owners retained the name ‘Irwin &
Billings’ and Michael Stewart,
who has managed the office since
1977, is the present owner.

The office of the early 1950's has
been totally rebuilt, completed in
early 1989. Irwin & Billings look for-
ward to serving old and new clients
alike in the new premises.
