Imagine that a brilliant but
possibly sociopathic psychiatrist is
enlisted by the CIA (Central In-
telligence Agency) to perform a
series of experiments on un-
suspecting civilians.

Imagine still further that the
psychiatrist has the perfect
‘cover’: as head of a reputable
clinic attached to a major hospital
he is in an ideal position to either
manipulate genuine patients or to
‘recruit’ patients referred by
Physicians. Sounds good so far?
Okay, let's see how we can
embellish this without making it
seem too imjlausible.

Let's make the psychiatrist a
man beyond suspicion, aman in a
position of extreme trust
{remember — to be effective the
conspiracy plot just has to involve
upper-echelon types as central
characters); so we'll make him the
President of the American
Psychiatric Association and hope
the APA doesn’t sue us into fiscal
oblivion. Are we having fun yet?
Good — onwards.

Now for the detail work: the
fine-tuning that fleshes-out the
basic framework.

The object of the experiments is
mind-control or brain-washing but
the medical and CIA types in our
book will use classical
bureaucratese and ca! it ‘psychic
driving’ or ‘depatterning’ (this
makes them sound cold, ruthless
and calculating; the public expects
these kins of character traits in
their villains).

The CIA will fund the experi-
ments through covert means,
making grants via dummy cor-
porations and research ‘fronts’
established to keep the Agency's
‘good name’ unbesmirched.

Since the formufa for such books
demands it. our book’s protagonist
will discover that this particular
psychiatrist and his institute are
but one part of a program that ac-
tually encompasses scores ut
research facilities spread across
the length and breadth of North
America.

(Note: as Canadians writing a
Canadian novel we appeal to our
domestic readers and the larger
American market by ‘breaking’
the story ina large Canadian city
and then tracking down the bad
guys in Washington and Virginia: it
works every time and really pumps
up the old royalties).

‘black hats’ with the warped
psychiatrist. and the CIA types: we

ing of this dastardly scheme,
