1 Wednesday, August 3, 10a Private bids WV seawall North Shore News rejected on expansion THE SEAWALL extension from 24th Street to 25th Street will be undertaken by West Vancouver District: municipal employees, rather than a private contractor, council recently decided. The three bids received on the proposal came in higher than the $799,000 estimate provided by municipal staff, ranging from $852,000 to $1,027,000. WEST Vancouver Mayor Don Lanskail ...“‘fed up to the teeth with the kind of criticism we've been receiving.” “In our estimation, we can do the work for well under $1 million and we believe we can do it for less than $750,000," said municipal manager Terry Lester. Municipal employees would undertake the project with super- vision provided by engineering consultants Dayton & Knight. “We have done this type of work before...we have heavy con- struction experts on staff,’’ added Lester. Lester assured council that he would be watching the project progress on a daily bisis. | shop N CURTIS Writer By MAURE Contr pieterny Mayor Don Lanskail was coan- cerned, however, that council might be criticized for adding an item such as the seawall extension project onto the end of the council agenda, at the last minute. “And I'm just about fed up to the teeth with the kind of criticism we've been receiving,’ said Lan- skail. “Are we going to be nailed to the cross for something that might appear to be underhanded?”” Lan- skail questioned. Upon hearing from Lester that approvals from the Department of Fisheries were still pending, coun- cil voted to table the matter and call a special meeting, if necessary, to get the project underway. There were concerns that the work might not commence until September if a quorum was not reached at the Aug. 2 council meeting, the only one planned for the month. Director of Operations Barry Lambert Jater told the News that the high bid prices on the project were likely a result of the abun- dance of construction work available during the summer. body 1986 LTD, FREE -U-DRIVE CARS Caddy's to Tercels : ‘ences ae, 922-2500 § 30th year of service to tens of | thousands of domestic & foreign car & light tuk owners 1.C.B.C. vendor BCAA approved A.R.A. certified Quality workmanship — Trustworthy service 174 Pemberton Ave. N.
