Two tons of prime rib.’’ The band members were unhurt and their 1977 Chevy van escaped without a dent. ‘“‘They were going to slaughter the cow soon. | think they did it the next day.’’ Now operating out of a house on Bowser Avenue in North Van- couver, Go Four 3 formed in Feb- ruary 1984 from the remnants of a 60s girl group The Debutantes. “We don’t have any other jobs. If we don’t play we don’t get paid. It’s a junny equation that way.”’ —drummer Ian Noble {In January 1987, the four- member band released Six Friends, its second disc. A tite of Six Friends stems from the philosophy of singer Roxanne Heichert, who believes everyone needs six friends to be pallbearers at funeral time. “Six close friends in life is a ma- jor accomplishment,’’ theorizes Noble, 24. ‘‘If you’ve got six close friends in life you’ve done pretty well I'd say."* The latest release after their Go Four 3 debut EP, the 12-song Six Friends is a compilation of raw pop that leads to comparisons with The Jam and The Cult. By STEPHEN BARRINGT News Reporter Following a March 6 concert at the UBC Student Union Building, Go Four 3 heads south for a six- week tour of unexplored territory on the American West Coast. “This will be our first time and it’s going to take a lot of work to just be noticed down there,’’ No- ble admits. ‘‘But I look forward to a good response.” When he was nine years old, a paper route helped pay for Noble’s first drum kit. ‘I’ve been playing the drums since —- that’s all {’ve wanted to do.”” Self-managed, band members Noble, Heichert, Steve Quinn and Gord Badanic put in 12 hours a week in rehearsals and are booked on a hectic touring schedule. “We don’t have any other jobs. If we don’t play we don’t get paid,’’ Noble says with more than a note of humor. ‘It’s a funny equation that way.”’ Another Canadian tour slated for early summer will see the Go Four 3 members hopping in their van and heading off to conquer 10 provinces and a territory. “To me its a paid vacation — I get to sec places | haven’t seen be- fore.”’ The group’s distinctive name comes from old Air Force jargon for landing on an aircraft carrier: on scope, on target, perfect land- ing. Coined by a pilot, Go Four 3 “sounded good’’ and ‘‘just sort of rolls off the tongue,’’ says Noble. An early name suggestion of Aileron was axed.
