12 - Wednesday, August 20, 1986 - Nocth Shore News 1,000 CASES REPORTED Bike thefts increase POLICE are seeing an alarming increase in the number of bicycle thefts in the Lower Mainland area and are urging Owners to take precautions fo secure their proper- ty. Bicycle thefts in the Vancouver region alone exceed 1,000 reported cases since the beginning of the year. Sophisticated racing, touring and mountain terrain models on the market have made bieveles high-priced items that appeal to thieves. Some mountain bikes are worth $1,000 of more on the retail mar- ket. Police believe members of well- organized bicycle theft rings are responsible for the sharp rise in stolen bicycles. Stolen bikes can) be resold as parts to new owners on the black market. The thieves are usually well or- panized; preferring to scout bicycle racks at parks, shopping malls or recreation centres, The expensive models that are not secured or secured with cheap locking devices are plucked out and quickly deposited in an awaiting van, ar simil r vehicle. TEPS (R477), On the North Shore since 1955 OFFICERS FROM the North Vancouver RCMP investigate the accident Monday which severed the leg of a North Vancouver woman at the B.C. Rail yard. Anita Paull, 38, was taking a short-cut through the yard at the time of the accident and was trapped under moving train cars. Woman loses leg in train tragedy GENERAL ELECTRIC'S APPLIANCE LEADERSHIP IS SO ANITA PAULL, 38, from the Squamish Indian band, had her tight leg severed by a moving rail car at the B.C. Rail yard Monday night. Paull, who is in satisfactory condition at Lions Gate Hospital, was found by a BC _ Rail engineman at 6:15 p.m. on the track at the Mosquito Creek level crossing. BC Rail information officer Barry Wall said the engineman was radio-equipped and was able to cal] for emergency assistance. He said the accident involved a CN locomotive, which was pulling 85 cars that were being switched from the BC Rail yard to the CN rail yard. North Vancouver RCMP said Cst. B. Marshall happened to be in the area and helped apply first aid along with Father Dennis of St. Paul’s Church. Police report Paull and another North Vancouver resident were taking a shortcut through the rail yards and were crawling under the box cars before the accident.
