20 ~ Sunday, March 21, 1993 - North Shore News Council chided for accepting award NORTH VANCOUVER City Mayor Jack Loucks and two members of North Vancouver City Council were condemned Monday night for accepting Canada's 125th anniversary medals when the same awards were given to North Shore News columnist Doug Collins. By Stephen Wisenthal Contributing Writer Lionel Kenner said the mayor and councillors Barbara Perrault and John Braithwaite should give back the medals, which were awarded in the name of the Gov- ernor General of Canada at a cer- emony on Jan. 20, He added that they should also have walked cut of the ceremony. He said the medals were made “ominous'? because they went to Collins, ‘Noel Wright, his former editor (and defender), and Peter Speck, the publisher of the ir- responsible tabloid in which Col- lins’ scribblings are published.” Kenner said that by accepting Neil Squire foundation founder dies THE FOUNDER of the Neil Squire Foundation, William (Bill) Cameron, died on Saturday, March 13 after a short illness. He was 68. The Neil Squire Foundation is a Canadian non-profit organization that develops and researches ser- vices and technologies for people with severe physical disabilities. The goal of the foundation is to help these people gain increased independence. . ; Tie foundation was named after Mr. Cameron’s nephew, Neil Squire, who became a quadriplegic following a car acci- dent in 1981. , Mr. Cameron was a mechanical engineer who was raised in Saskatchewan. His diverse career included work in the United States, Japan and Canada where he developed more than 100 pro- ducts for more than 60 com- panies in consumer and industri- al markets. Mr. Cameron started the foun- dation in 1984, It currently employs more than 50 people and has offices across Canada. Mr. Cameron received numerous awards for his innova- tions that have helped people. Some of these awards include the 1993 Canada 125 Award, the 1990 Therese Casgrain Award from Health and Welfare Canada and the 1992 Distinguished Citizen Award from the District of North Vancouver District. He was recently nominated for an Order of Canada. Mr. Cameron died at his home in Deep Cove. He is survived by his wife, Peggy, and five children.
