The day-long festival of art and social change has rocked Cates Park every second Sunday in August since 1990. That first rent eight sum- mers ago was billed as “a in the park,” says festival pany founder Irwin Gostindie. It grew from a government- funded, volunteer-run youth project. The aim was to pull youths from the community and give them production, promotion and management skills. The musical program was purposely diverse to encourage teen festival-goers to break out of their musical " cliques and open their minds to new views and new sounds. “Our subile goal was to inspire young people to get together to listen to music in a positive, alcohol-free space,” says Oostindie. Three hundred youths attended the first festival. Subsequent festivals attracted proportionately smaller num- bers of youth as more and more young adults were attracted to the event's. expanding focus. . en’s programming and family activites were. added. Cross-cultural pro- - gramming fearured First Nations performers from around the world. Attendance grew to 8,000 in °94 and °95 then fell to 5,500 last year. Oostindie blames the drop cen poor promotion. This year, he’s expecting attendance to” | retum to previous heights. | New main-stage acts like: . West Coast rappers Rascalz target teens. Loud, Brand New Unit and Hellenkeller are other local acts with strong followings. While the festival has refo- cused on youth, First Nations programming remains a strong component. James Bay Cree performers Chisasibi Warriors play the main stage. Lil’Wat Hand Drummers from Mount Currie return this year. Chief Leonard George and Children of Takaya of the neighboring Tsleil-Waututh Nation honor ‘the festival site with song and: - dance. The Squamish Nation hosts a salmon BBQ...
