Ao - Wednesday, May 30, 1984 - North Shore News Golden goose he latest Gallup Poll, suggesting Cana- dians now place a higher priority on reducing unemployment than on reduc- ing government deficits, will comfort those politicians who believe all problems can be solved merely by throwing the taxpayers’ money at them. Unfortunately, it's not that simple. Even the rightwing ‘‘restraint’’ parties -- B.C.’s Socreds and Brian Mulroney’s federal Tories -- acknowledge the social and economic gravity of the ongoing unemployment crisis, with the misery it in- flicts on countless thousands of individuals, especially among the younger generation. At this stage, however, the basic question re- mains one of priorities. Time and again, direct government sub- sidies have proven a costly and inefficient method of job creation, with only limited, short term benefits. By contrast, it has been conclusively shown that by far the biggest single source of new jobs is small business, not government make-work projects. The latter approach inevitably means continuing government deficits, which keep interest rates high, and/or extra taxation, which encourages inflation and eats into business profits. Both ways, it becomes ever tougher for small businesses to find the money to expand or even, sometimes, to survive. The fact is that unemployment and gov- ernment deficits are both symptoms of the same malady, but for a LASTING cure it’s the deficits that have to be treated first. If they persist, or swell further, they can kill the goose -- small business -- that lays almost all the golden job-creating eggs. UnStrike unstuc ( first the UnStrike on the buses was quite fun, with drivers in T-shirts and 25¢ pledge coupons, and even despite the odd curbside pause. Now — with weeks lengthening to months, rotating shutdowns stranding thousands and a total stoppage looming from June 15 — the fun’s over. As we predicted, the UnStrike has become unstuck. It’s high time heads on both sides were banged together in the name of the lonp- suffering public. 1 een VUNLE OF ern TE: aseD WERT VANTONIVER sunday - : Diaplay Advertising 980-0511 a Pa\¥ vA, Classified Advertising 986-6222 north shore Newsroom 985 2131 news Circulation 986 1337 Subscriptions 980-2707 1139 Lonsdale Ave . For starters, even if Ted’s two dripping passengers had reached the nearest phone booth half a mile away, would a Van- couver taxi have driven empty to the south end of the bridge for a $3.50 fare to cross 11?
