These are significant milestones to the team who wish to become the first all women’s sailboat racing crew to enter the Victoria-Maui International Yacht Race during July 1984. This win came during their second race of the Snowflake Series, a series sponsored by the West Vancouver Yacht Club. ‘‘Translating this three hour win into a ten day win will become the focus of our training during the next few months,’’ says coach Kit Davidson. He believes the team’s better than average existing competencies, com- bined with their future train- ing and racing experience will prepare them to be con- tenders during the next trans- Keeper joins soccer greats SENIOR CLAN goalkeeper, Jerry Vick, became Simon Fraser University’s fifth NAIA first team soccer All- American selection in the team’s mine year history recently. Vick joins Clan soc- cer greats, Bill Village (Def. *75), Ken Whitehead (Fwd. °76), Darryl Wallace (GK *77), and Jack Attadia (Fwd. *7T7) as Simon Fraser’s only first team national! selections. A native of Tacoma, Washington, Vick posted a 0.64 goals against average this season, while playing in ali of the Clan’s regular and post season games. Over the Clan’s 18-4-1 season, Vick recorded 14 shutouts and did not surrender a goal in Wichita Falls, Texas, the site of this year’s NAIA National Championships, where Simon Fraser captured the national title for the second consecutive year and for the third time in its nine year history. Vick, a fourth year Business major, recorded 30 - shut outs in 46 games that he played for SFU over his two- year career. Project Manager Thais McKee is at present preparing to launch an exten- sive resource hunt which will result in the team receiving financial sponsorship, train- ing and education oppor- tunities, boat and crew equip- ment and local community support. ‘‘Our network is growing rapidly and to date we have received funds from as far away as Toronto and a documentary film making of- fer from a local producer,’’ states McKee. At present, all crew con- tenders are undergoing an in- tensive racing, practicing and lecturing program. This is just one program that has been arranged by the Cana- dian Women’s Sailboat Rac- ing Association formerly known as the West Coast Women’s Yacht Racing gAssociation. In the coming months the team will con- tinue to learn endurance- event survival skills, boat maintenance techniques, sail- ing theory and ocean racing strategy.
