Outdoor activity in the winter is very exhilarating, but can also be very dangerous if one is unaware of the ‘‘hazards in the hills’’. Simon Fraser University’s department of athletics is sponsoring a wilderness sur- vival course, focused at young people grades six to 12, who would like to learn more about winter outdoor safety. The course includes three evening lectures and a weekend field trip to Mt. Seymour on January 28 and 29, 1984. Prominent Canadian climber and mountaineer John Simpson will be the course instructor. Simpson has climbed extensively in North America on Mt. McKinley, Mt. Robson and Mt. Rainier, and in the Himalayas on Mt. Congga during the 1982 Canadian Expedition to China. He is presently completing his master’s degree in education at Simon Fraser University. During the lectures, students will cover topics such as equipment selection, proper clothing, food preparation, navigation, avalanche recognition signs and general winter camp- craft. The lectures are scheduled for Jan. 11, 18 and 25, 1984. Students will have a chance to put the ‘principles into Practice’’ on the weekend winter campout to Mt. Seymour.
