Bz - Sunday. May. 30, 1982 --Nosth Shore News - Espo We're here to stay There seems to be a bit of “gloom and doom” talk going on about the North American Soccer League this season, and it’s about time some of us who are involved with the game spoke out. First of all, this league is here to stay. Maybe there will be a few tough years and maybe a few mistakes were made earlier on that make it a bit more difficult now, but I am totally confident that professional soccer is going to be around for a long, long time. Sure things are tough nght now in the league, but have you checked the economy lately? Things are tough all over. Look at the British leagues. They're all going through the same type of problem over there, but of course, the game is con- siderably older and more established. Look around and see how many people are playing soccer throughout North America. More than in the other sports, and that in- cludes baseball in the United States. And these kids are growing up and becoming interested in = greater in- volvement in the game both at the participant and spectator levels. That's where the future of the game is, and that’s probably the biggest reason why it will succeed. Now, before 1 paint too rosy a picture let me state that I think there are problem areas in the league and one of them is mght at the top. Perhaps one of the early problems of the league was that it tned to be too many things to too many people. Eventually the NASI will reach a size where the clubs remaining are the ones with the good ownership and management and only then will the league start to ex- pand — from a_ strong foundation. ee by Terry Yorath Speaking personally, I feel that the biggest mistake this league has made since its beginning in the late 1960s, was their failure to im- plement a development system for producing North American players. With one or two. ex- ceptions, Vancovuer in- cluded, there are no reserve or youth teams around the league. And how can you expect a sport to catch on in North America. without building and developing the game for the North Amenicans to play? The talent is there, it just needs developing. And it needs developing sooner than when the youngster 1s fimished school Take a look at our team David Harvey. Now before you become too shocked, just think what an opportunity it is for the youngster to learn the skills with the best, and also to have the opportunities in education that are available here in North America. It can be done. Soccer is a game which is the most popular in the world and it will catch fire here as well. The league started trying to ram it down people’s throats too soon instead of starting from that steady and solid foundation. And of course, the best ‘way of having the game grow is by the on-field product. That's something we're trying to sort out for the fans here in Vancouver, and it's something at which we're going to succeed. There's nothing wrong with the game over here. It’s just a child learning to walk. Sometimes they stumble a bit before they start running. a es fe SB. “VOLLEY INTERESTING’, but for Hillside player Tracey Cullen and doubles partner Marina Martin the final result wasn't.
