her is keeping track of her
reading glasses which she
only needs to check out the
fine-print on schedules.

’ She carries, as I do, an
extra pair of glasses and a
copy of her prescription.

Mom also emphasizes
sensible walking shoes as
uneven pavements and
cobblestones can trip people
who wear reading glasses. A
sprained ankle, or worse,
isn't fun for anyone. On
occasion, I've talked her into
wearing slacks, on night
flights where we can doze
off. a

Planes are drafty,
especially near the rear
where smokers are parked
(me!) She carries a pair of
knitted slippers which she

puts on the minute we take
off. They are warmer than
shoes and tuck into a corner
of her handbag.

She always carries a tube
of hand cream in her purse
because her skin tends to dry
out plus a pile of “Wash-and-
Dri” packéts in case the
flight is turbulent and she
doesn’t want to take the
chance of walking to the
washroom to scrub up
“before meals. I take the
chance of walking because
the perfume or something in
the packets makes me itch.

Mom is a fantastic “diary
keeper” and often I’ve asked
her questions like: “What
train did we take from Basel,
Switzerland to Amsterdam
in 1975?”

“Now dear, you know it
was the express that
departed at 8:05. How could
you forget!” She can also tell
me the complete cast of any
play we ever saw in London.
Every travel writer needs a
Mom like mine.
