(UPI wirephoto) Railworkers ratify agreement By narrow margin VANCOUVER (UPC) - British Columbia's 2,200 railworkers have voted by a slim margin to accept a 30- month contract with the provincial railway they shut down far five weeks in a costly and bitter strike, a union spokesman said Monday. Council of Railway Unions chief spokesman Norm Farley said the railworkers voted 52.2 per cent to ratify the agreement wrung out of weeks of intense negotiations by rookie Labor Minister Jack Heinrich. The contract, retroactive to Aug. 1, 1979, includes wage increases of 8 per cent in the first year, 9 per cent effective Aug. 1, 1980 and a 5 per cent increase as of Aug. 1, 1981. “It was a cliffhanger,” said Farley, “Our members weren't too pleased with the fact that it gave us a per- centage wage increase in- stead of an across-the-board one. Railworkers, members of seven unions represented by the council, walked off the job Dec. 18 to back contract demands and stayed off for five long weeks that cost the province more than $34 million. The strike caused costly delays in an already-shaky grain transportation system. All RSP’s are not alike. RSP LOANS. ~ QUICK The dispute also hurt several North Shore _in- dustries. Main obstacle in the dispute was a company demand that the number of crew members manning BCR trains be reduced to three from four. Henrich — who won praise from all corners for his handling of his first major strike as labor minister — cleared the way for set- tlement with his proposal that the manning issue be put ‘aside until a factfinder examines the problem and makes recommendations by Sept. 30 of this year.
