Yukari Yoshioka, 25, had been given a 10% chance of survival after she was strick- en with a severe case of pneumonia in carly January, weeks after landing in Vancouver. Her doctor, Warren Mayo, boosted that to. a 50% chance of survival in early March, when media attention focused on the sick woman from Okayama City. Now, Maye says Yoshioka has a 90% or greater chance of survival and hopes she will leave the intensive care unit within wo weeks. “She’s doing much better. Much, much, much better. Her parents, her friends, nurses, doctors, physiotherapists —— we're all delighted.” he said. Mayo said Yoshioka was probably the sickest young pneumonia patient the hos- pital has had in the intensive care unit in the last 10 years.
