48 — Sunday, December 30, 1990 - North Shore News TRAVEL Arctic weather makes travel south appealing TWO OF my daughters lost the power in their homes in the past week. One had two freezing nights but got it back in the early hours of the morning. The other fost her hydro, telephone and cable when a tree jumped over the power lines. If that wasn’t) bad enough, when the power came on her water pipes burst, leaving her knee-deep in water — with none to drink or flush. Sweep it out, but don’t make coffee out of it. When it gets cold here we think about heading south, Don’t make it sound any better than itis. Did you know it storms in Hawaii, Guam (Typhoon Ross just hit), Mexico and Costa Rica? That's not ‘‘fun in the sun.”* At least, here, someone would know you had a problem. Imagine being in the midst of a tropical storm, knee-deep in, mud and out of touch with your family. Here, my youngest daughter moved in with my oldest daughter (our kids like each other!) and even brought her cat. Oldest daughter’s dog cooperated by not eating the cat, but that was just luck. You may not be a fan of Jean Auel but the mammoths existed. One of my favorite trips was to the ‘Mammoth Site’ in South Dakota — Hot Springs is the closest town. This place is like an arena, full of gradually progressing digs of bones. Not too many of us get to South Dakota. it’s inconvenient. If I were heading for Saskat- chewan, in a camper, I'd probably detour through both North and South Dakota and Nebraska (spr- ing or fall, but forget July!) If your summer vacation starts about May, visit the Mammoth Barbara McCreadie TRAVELWISE Site. If you're interested in bone digs, you can get on the mailing list for updates: Mammoth Site, Hot Springs, South Dakota. Ive heard good things about this: American Youth Hostels (you don’t have to be adolescent to qualify), but especially check out the one in Santa Monica, CA. For years the term ‘youth’ always preceeded the term ‘hostel’. That isn’t the case any more. This place is built around an old tavern and has 200 beds, all low cost. Contact: Santa Monica AYH Hostel, (213) 393-9913. Write: 1436 Second St., Santa Monica, CA 90401. I don’t know much about this next bit except the members seem to have fun.
