THERE’S no Christian
group that’s more
respected than the
Salvation Army.

But very few people know
_ where the “Sally Ann” came
from. William and Catherine
Booth, founders of the _
Salvation Army, were both
Methodists.

Methodism had originated
as a revival of Christianity
among the working class of
Great Britain. But just as
John Wesley (1703-1791),
the founder of Methodism .

the Salvation Army.

Like Wesley and the carly
Methodists, the Sa!vationists
were assaulted on the streets
of Britain.

Litde wonder that
Catherine Booth wrote, “The
more I see of fashionable reli-
gion, the more } despise it.”

The Booths insisted that
both men and women could
be Salvation Army officers.
They also insisted that as well
as doing good works to help
the poor, the Salvation Army
should preach the simple
“gespel of “Blood and Fire"
‘with the Cross of Christ at
the centre.

William Booth’s Salvation
Army brings the Wesleyan
evangelical and social passion
night into our dimes.
