north shore ASews sso MATE BOX niaving fields There is no shortage of plaving fields in the Distnet of North Vancouver. There is, however, a shortage of plaving fields in the City of North Vancouver. The acy, with half the pe ulation and almost half the chil- dren, has only anc pl for 3.5 in the d district has 66 and the Grass fields in the city are six, in the district 22. All-weather fields in the city are four and in the district. eight. G dia- mond fields in the city are five and in the district 31. When ir comes to school playing ficlds the district has 54 and the city nine. The North = Vancouver creation Commission has en it upon itself to allocate playing fields to both city and district residents without ¢ crimination and since there are not sufficient playing fickds in the city, there is a shortage for all. The district, has builr and/or is in the process of building 11 playing; fields. The city has built none. The city is increasing its population with- out providing any facilities, In a public referendum dis- ict residents approved S26 nN for additional facilities. The city, on the other hand, {oa study ing shared berween the city: and the district: such as recreation, the North Shore Reergation Commission provided mislead - ing informacion to the consul- ts. District facilities worth $30 miliion were listed as $3 million for mple report, costing district resic $48,000, sug; shared) serv both the city and district resi- dents. In ceality, they are cost- ing district residents dearly. This alse is one of the rea- sons why the District Heritage Fund is shrinking while the City’s Heritage Fund is grow- ing. ft is also ane of the reasons why taxes are higher in the trict. The city is increasing, its population while the district is punting the so fields. ‘This is reason number one why there is a shortage of playing fields. And reason number two is that Scheol District 44 has faited to maintain its own schoo! playing ficids. And acw they have asked the district to accept the respos ty for doing so as well. When we wrote te the minister ta) ask him to give the school district tore money to fis the playing, fields he said School District AY cives the same ntaney as all other school districts, Ali other school districts manage to keep up the standard of their playing, fields. so) why not yours, he said. [ suggested that this should go toa public referendum dur- ing the fall election. Let the people decide, | said. But my motion was defeated. J also made a motion that since the city is refusing to talk about amalgamation we inform them that we will pull out from any and all shared services that are costing, us money. ‘That movion too was defeated by district council. Ernie Crist, Councillor District cf North Vancouver A history lesson for Mr. Wright Dear Editor: Re: Brits, too, face loss of identity -- Nocl Wright's col- umn, Aug. 11. I should like to offer some corrections to Mr. Wright’s view of how history is taught in British schools. It may have been the case that in his day, history was taught from a_ nationalistic and chronological perspec: tive, but ehar has not been the case for at feast a quarter cen- tury. If the Labour government (and Mr. Wright does not give his sources for his infor- mation) is indeed “planning to have British history taught in a new, sanitized way in the nation’s schools,” then it is merely confirming what has been the case for at Icast a gencration. 1 taught history in an English comprehensive school (equivalent of a high school) in the mid-*70s. Our curriculum aimed to teach children about diversity, plurality, tolerance, to devel- op a perspective that would transcend nationalism and parochialism. The Grade 8 curriculum focused on North American history and included a unit on the aboriginal peoples of the Pacific Northwest. Elizabeth Mathers North Vancouver Mirco-Star 6163 Pentium-ll!
