Those students whose grades are not good enough to gain university acceptance or can not afford university go directly into the work foree from high school as unskilled labour. As a result the Canadian International Development Association (CEDA) developed a finding plan and asked the Canadian Bureau of International Education (CBIE), a non- government organization, to manage the project. CBIE selected Capilano College as a model for the new school, Hariri-Canadian Higher Institute of technology (HCHIT). Capilano College’s business administration and applied business technology cenartments have developed a three vear business administration diploma program and a two year office administration program for HCHIT. Capilano College will send four or five instructors to the Lebanese school to work on four-month contracts starting in September. Capifana College will also train Lebanese instrue- tors that arrive in Vancouver in March. The main objective is to foster an applied learning envi- ronment. Students of HCHIT will work in the business field during the summer months applying what they have learned. Sunday, February 7. 1999 — North Shore News — 27 m Schoo “Study locally, learn globally is the key,” said Doug Loblaw, Capilano College’s ‘project manager. “T hey (Lebanese students) will be able to remain in Lebanon to study, they will have faculty from both countries and North American-developed curriculum. Lebanon has always been a trading nation and will continue the tradition with this pro- ject.” HCHIT is a privately funded institution founded by Ratik Hariri, a multi-millionaire and fermer prime minister of Lebanon. Hariri will subsidize some of the cost of tuition that is comparable to Capilano College’s tuition rates ($1,500- 2,000). The former prime minister has personally paid for the edu- cation of approximately $18,000 Lebanese students. The new college is situated on the site of an old private high school thar is undergoing approximately $2 million in renovations. CIDA funding of the project runs out in December of 2000. It is hoped that HCHIT will be self-sufficient by then. Capilano College intends to continue faculty exchanges in the years to follow and possibly incorporate a study abroad pro- gram for Capilano College business students. 3-year term deposit Minimum Depusit: $1,000 Good, you're still reading.
