44 — Friday, April 25, 1997 — North Shore News Winterhawks win Winter Club squad beat Spokane in final THE North Shere Winter Club Winterhawks took their game to the Best of the West Tournament held in Kirkland, Washington and returned as champions. The Winterhawks, coached by Brad Duggan, who in 1983 was a member of a Portland squad that’ won that year’s Memorial Cup, played the tournament with- out losing a single game. Featuring teams from Seattle, Tacoma, Utah, Vancouver Island and the Fraser Valley, NSWC met Spokane in the final game. A close 2-1 game featured a litte bit of everything including a penalty shot (stopped by NSWC’'s Sam Huston), a locker room mishap (nearly resulting in Thomas Woods being scratched duc to a large lump on his furchead before he scored the winning goal) and flickering lights (a storm featuring high winds was juc. passing).
