NV watertront lot Dear Editor: I refer to the March 12 letter of complaint by Ms. Melody Richards that her home will have its views obstructed by the erection of a so-called “monster” home in front of hers. 1 feel obligated to write as there are argu- ments here that your readers and North Vancouver District staff should be I aware of. First, Ms. Richards built a three-storey house on a lot after first demolishing 2 single- storey with a full basement on that Jot. Immediately behind her house, facing the water is another home. Did Ms. Richards take into account that she would block the view of the people occupying that house before she built her new three-storey home in front? I not. If Ms. Richards is so concerned about the erection of monster homes in her neighbor- hood, why did she replace a single-storey and basement home in the last five years with a full three-storey house that goes higher than, the old roof level by one full storey? What is good for the goose, Ms. Richards! If Ms. Richards wanted an unrestricted water view she should have purchased a ranch- er in front. Then she could have done the same as the existing owner and we would have heard no more about it. The home that she compiains about is a rancher located on waterfront property in Dollarton. Why should the owner of that lot be restricted to building another rancher when he is surrounded by multi-level homes, just because he occupies waterfront? By implementing this ridiculous bylaw North Vancouver District is forcing real estate values down. My question is, how can these petty bureaucrats at the district be allowed ro get away with this in a so-called democratic and free market society? David A. Reduce our auto dependence sea -Fe Ger The Bridge Built (March 7 News). I believe that building a third crossing would have a dis- astrous impact. on the North Shore. If we, build more roads, more space for cars would be our only gain. History tells us that when there is space for more cars; more people will drive. We will need more internal arterial roads, more parking, more gas stations, more traffic lights, etc. We will end up having less space in our beautiful city. We wili have to breathe more poi- sonous exhaust fumes. Our children will have to cross busier streets. We will have to cut down more life-giving trees to accommodate more auto- mobiles. Our quality of life will diminish. If we can accommodate more traffic our politicians won't be able to hold back the preseure of property develop- ers. Houses (unaffordable houses) will continue to crawl up ‘the mountainside turning our forests into concrete. Our current water supply will become overburdened, our current sewage treatment facil- ities will have to be improved due to an increased population. Expenditures will rise. Taxes tise. The cost of living on the North Shore will rise. We don’t need to build another bridge. We need to share rides, take the bus, ride bikes, work at home, walk to work, etc. Our community cannot afford crossing guards. Our province cannot afford any further capital expenditure. Who will pay for this bridge? Our children and many genera- tions after them. Reducing our dependence on the automobile is the only answer.
