has an interesting
pedigree behind the
obvious charms of
forward blackberry fruit, hints
of herb and vanilla, all rounded
off by a light teuch of oak.

Back in 1985, Robert Mondavi
dipped his finger in a wine glass, heid it
up and noticed the wind was blowing
from the south. He may have been look-
ing at his international sales reports at

market wines under the Caliterra mar-
que.
The trend toward “globalization™ has
its downside, even in the wine trade: the
success of Mondavi and his California
cronies penetrating world markets with
excellent inexpensive cabernet resulted

in cabernet being planted in places vou
couldn't find on a map, sometimes at
the expense of traditional varieties.

The result? Lakes of sub-average wine
whose bland ‘international’ style even
rubbed offon wines venerable enough
to know better.

The upside of globalization has been
the spread of up-to-date winemaking
methods and technology, which is now
being applied to make wines of more
distinctive regional character (i.e. even in
the dark you'd probably know this is a
Chilean wine and from the slighty “lac-
tic” finish you might peg it as an
Errazuriz product).

Who'd have thought you'd ever say
that about a wine under $10:
