LONSDALE ELEMENTARY

School was built during a time of

rapid growth,when a housing boom
was under way on the North Shore.

The mid-Lonsdale area was in
need of an elementary school in
1911 and this school not only met
the needs of the younger children in
the arca, but it also temporarily

housed the North Vancouver High
School on the top floor from 1911
to 1915.

In 19[5 the North Vancouver
High School was relocated to the
lop floor of Queen Mary Senaol,
230 Keith Road. Queen Mary
school had been designed in 1914-
1915 as both a primary and sec-
ondary school.

Lonsdate School was designed
in 1911 by architect George
Campbell. The additions, needed by
1925, were designed by Benzie and
Bow, Architects.

Much like the other schools in

the city, it had to be fireproof,
therefore its construction was solid
with a stone foundation and brick
walls.

Over the years it has seen some
change; for example, the original
windows hive since been replaced.
To many of its former pupils, the
school has remained much the same
over the years, and a good number
of students have fond memories of
their days at Lonsdale School.
