But there is a lot more to do in
Whistler than just ski. Golf, fish-
ing, flightseeing, heli-hiking, river
rafting, horseback riding and
camping are just some of the
numerous activities that await
visitors to Whistler.

And while the winter months
attract a large number of visitors
to Whistler, the summer months
are equally busy.

Golf is probably one of the
most popular summertime activi-
ties enjoyed by people who go to
Whistler,

Arnold Palmer, one of the
statesmen of the game, discovered
Whistler when he went to the
resort to design one of the area’s
two golf courses. His design in-
cluded allowing water to come in-
to play on 13 of the 18 holes,

Palmer was on hand to official-
ly open the Whistler Golf Club on
Aug. 22, 1983.

The other golf course at
Whistler is the Chateau Whistler
Golf. Course, which is slated to be
officially opened this spring.

The course is actually situated
on the side of a mountain.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones
Jr., the Chateau Whistler Golf
Course includes waterfalls and
streams running off the side of
Blackcomb Mountain.

A third golf course is currently
being designed and built for the
Whistler area. Called the Green
Lakes Golf Course, the course is
being built by Burrard Interna-
tional Developers and designed by
golfing great Jack Nicklaus, and
set to open in August of 1994.

For the kids, and for the adult
kid at heart, there two waterslides
at Whistler Springs, along with
three hot tubs, a tanning salon,
sun and observation decks and a
family restaurant.

Whistler Windsurfing, located at
Alta Lake,

Visitors to this recreational fa-
cility can rent windsurfers, canoes,
row-boats and wet suits for a
variety of leisure activities. Don’t
know how to windsurf? Lessons
are available.

For the fisherman of the family,
Green River Fishing Guides offers
fully guided fishing tours by either
four-wheel drive or float plane in-
to some of Whistler’s wilderness
areas,

The service is also offered by
Pemberton Inland Sport Fishing.

River rafting is another popular
spring and summertime activity at
Whistler. Whistler River Adven-
tures Ltd. offers guided tours.

Sight-seeing tours aad heli-
hiking are two other popular ac-
tivities Whistler has to offer, with
trips around the Alpine Meadows
and Rainbow Mountain.

Once you’ve had a taste of the
recreational life Whistler has to
offer, your next stop should be
Whistler Village, located in the
heart of the mountain resort.

Visitors will find everything
from book shops to art galleries,
sports shops to high-fashion
clothing stores.

And most will enjoy the quaint
styling of the carefully designed
village. In the heart of Whistler

Village, you can walk through the
streets without worrying about
traffic; there isn’t any.

But do watch for street enter-
tainers because they are commonly
seen through the summer,

Nighttime entertainment has
always been a big draw at
Whistler. The Whistler Village is
home to several neighborhood
pubs, lounges and piano bars.

Tourist services in the village
include a post office, hair salon,
travel agency, credit union, a
rent-a-car outlet, the Whistler
Resort Association and the
Whisiler Conference Centre.

The resort municipality of
Whistler was officially incor-
porated on Sept. 6, 1975 and the
municipal area covers 12,630 hec-
tares or 31,209 acres.

Whistler’s two mountains,
Blackcomb and Whistler Moun-
tain, are part of the Pacific Range
of Coast Mountains. ;

Annual snowfall at- Whistler is
150 centimetres per month be-
tween December and February.

Mountain-top glaciers extend
the ski season into the summer for
die-hard enthusiasts. oe

Whistler is only .a two-hour
drive up the Sea to Sky highway
from the North Shore, and BC
Rail’s northbound train from
North Vancouver stops at
Whistler daily.
