Broadway, Vancouver _ 879-7443 pulls into an alley behind the Sandy Cove nightclub on Marine Drive. The popular night spot is about to close and some patrons leave through the back door. A young woman spots Schierer’s car. She approaches the driver’s side and begins chatting with him. The two know cach other and laugh when she tells Schierer about a mutual acquaintance who has decided to get married. Suddenly, the owner of the nightclub comes running out the back door and up to Schierer. She tells him that a group of people who were kicked out of the club earlier on are about to start a fight in front of the nightclub with her bouncers. Schierer radios for backup, turns on his flashing lights, speeds down the alley and continues on Marine Drive. As he artives at the scene, at least five fights are in progress. He runs into the crowd and at- tempts to restrain one man. The man zefuses to be arrested and takes a swing at Schicrer, who is forced to use his oleoresin cap- sicum (OC) spray to subdue the man. The pepper spray causes the man to fall to the ground. He is then handcuffed by Schierer and led to jail where his eyes are washed out with water. - Soon after, several other police officers arrive and break up the remaining fights. Ironically, says Schierer after- wards, the police receive very few complaints from the nightclub. Schierer says police work is changing. “f see the future impact of policing being budgetary problems and Charter of Rights decisions. These decisions directly affect. what we can do. “Ht’s not ‘if you were guilty of possession of narcotics,’ but rather ‘did we violate your rights.’ I never thought I would see that, ” he says.
