MAHON PARK is the site for the Variety Club Dog-a-thon on Saturday, May 30. ‘Families and their dogs will be walking laps around a track to raise money for B.C.’s Special Children. Participants will be soliciting pledges for their entry. Regis- tration forms are available at the North Shore News and local schools. Your pets will automatically qualify for judging in the many categories including largest dog, smallest dog, fluffiest dog and most laps walked. ‘Many of the North Shore businesses are supplying gifts, products and prizes for the event. Every child and pei will receive a goody bag. News columnist and North Shore resident Joy Metcalfe is the dog-a-thon honorary chairman. She and others look forward to the participation of celebrity North Shore residents and their pets. Join in the Variety Club Dog-a-thon on Saturday, May 30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mahon Park (16th and Jones in North Vancouver). Spectators are welcome. BC. SPCA humanitarian award winners announced NINE BRITISH Columbian animal lovers — including two North Shore residents — have received the 1992 humanitarian award for their dedication to caring for animals in their communities. The awards are given by the B.C. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), as part of their Kindness Month of May. The North Shore winners are Joyce Griffiths of West Van- couver and Joan Wilson of North Vancouver. Although the winners have diverse backgrounds and represent various regions of B.C., each has in common the goa! of helping animals that are hungry, homeless, hurt or abandoned. Griffiths has been active in the West Vancouver SPCA for some time, having been on the board of directors since 1972. Her work in- cluded the introduction of kitten therapy to long-term-care patients and helping with plans for a new SPCA building that opened in 1983. Wilson, a SPCA volunteer for over 50 years, has been president of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Vancouver Regional SPCA, as well as haven been volunteer committee chairperson and a member of the board of directors and the non-animal research foundation. Every year the SPCA cares for thousands of animals in thousands of different ways. The ability to provide food, shelter, medical care, adoptive homes and special programs is possible only through the efforts of volunteers like the 1992 award winners, and with support and donations from the public. Other provincial winners were: Tim Jacura, Kitimat; Dorothy Hutchinson, Nanaimo; Peggy Kernaghan, Shuswap; Dorothy Garrett, Queen Charlotte Islands; Patricia Sheppard, Parksville- Qualicum; Pat Chubb, Quesnel; and Maureen Slowski, Penticton. NEWS photo All types invited THE 40TH annual Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)-sponsored Junior Pet Show will provide an opportunity for young people to showcase their animal companions, whatever they may be. ‘ All animals must be healthy. dogs must be on leashes and other animals must be kept in cages or baskets. For this day only, properly restrained pets will be allowed to ride with their owners on buses, on the SeaBus and on Skytrain. The competition is open to pet owners between the ages of five and 18 who own cats or dogs over six months old, rabbits, chickens, rodents, guinea pigs, pigeons or caged birds. Prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories, and admis- sion for both participants and spectators is free.
