THE 1991 holiday season marks
the 100th anniversary of ‘The
Satvation Army's (TSA) tradi-
tional red kettle.

Last year in Canada, over half
a million people were assisted
through funds collected in the red
kettles. So, while Christmas is a
time of rejoicing and family cele-
brations for millions of Cana-
dians, for many more The Salva-
tion Army provides the only
Christmas cheer they will know
during the holiday season.

Captain Joseph McFee was un-
aware of the impact he would
make on the world when, 100
years ago, he set out the first ket-
ue to collect donations from
passers-by.

This traditica, which began on
the docks of San Francisco,
quickly spread across the country.
In 1898, the New York World
hailed TSA kettles as “‘the newest
and most novel device for collect-
ing money."'

Today, families are given
grocery cheques so that they can
buy and prepare their own dinners
at home. The homeless poor,
however, are still invited to share
