In his own words John Pozer recalls his humble radio days Qn his experiences canvassing door-to-door for the Canadian Cancer Society: **Last year | went to one house and a iitsle boy came to the door and he had one of these litle aluminum shovels. He said: ‘Mommy, there's a man at the door.’ Then he began to swing at my ankle and he hit me in the most sensitive part of my ankle, and | was ready to cali him some- thing a little more aggressive than ‘vou little brat." “* How did you get inte broad- casting?: “1 was always interested in radio. When | was eight years old, a radio broadcast came to our school and I would make sure TE had written a nice litle poem or something so 1 could get on the radio. At age 13 1 ended up with my own radio show. | went up to the radio station and said that I would like a job. The program director said if I could get a spon- sor, | could work there. So I got on my bicycle and went to Coca Cola plant, but the manager wasn’t there. Then I went to the 7-Up plant and the manager said he would sponsor my show. **Later, | was hired to work at a radio station in Montreal. You're a big city boy and this is not going to work out. Will you look for a job and let us know when you've found one?’ [ left the office and was walking down the hallway and said to myself: ‘Wait a minute. I've just been fired.” “Then | went to Ottawa. to the TV station CJOH and | walked in and said 1 would like to work here. The lady said that it’s possi- ble that they'll be interviewing in the near future and I asked why. She said Peter Jennings. who is now with ABC, is now going to go full time news, When I went in for the interview, they looked at me, and | was six feet, three in- ches tall, slim and looked a bit like Peter Jennings. After the in- terview, they said | had a TV show.”* What do you like to do to relax when you're not working?: °'! love to play golf. | belong to the Hollyburn Golf and Country Club, but I don’t use Hollyburn nearly as much as other people use it. I like it if someone invites me to their private golf courses. I fo fishing with the Kiwanis Club, when they have fishing derbies. | like to work my service club, ’'m invited to help fundraise for dif- ferent organizations. I do some work with the Liberal party.
