NEWS photo Nell Lucente INDEPENDENT ART consultants Betty Craig and Merla Beckerman Say it’s important for the cor- porate sectoy to surround itself with art. The pair run West Vancouver's Contemporary Art Collec- tions company out of thei: homes. In their own words How did Contemporary Art Col- (cctions actually come to be? Craig: *‘We researched the con- cept for a long time...we wanted to see if Vancouver was ready for this. We were both very interested in art. So we went back to Toron- to and Calgary and went through a lot of corporate collections there,..we came back and searched around here to see who was doing what and we found that no one was doing it — no consultants in- dependent of a gallery. , Beckerman: ‘lt was a new con- cept for Vancouver, and we thought that smaller firms could and should have art collections, because up until then only banks and large companies had them...So when we decided to in- troduce ourselves to this business community it was an educational process. Law firms could indeed get rid of their posters and reproductions and start to buy originals.** How do your services work? Beckerman: “You make an ap- pointment with us, we come to look at your office and we talk about what business you're in and what image you want to project. We would iell you that we specialize in Canadian work because we have some wonderful, wonderful artists. We would take a look at your budget, your spaces, and then come up with the actual art work. “We could make a proposal and bring you something on paper, or we would bring the work in directly. We sift: through the art, but it is the client who decides in the end.” What are your main considera- tions when choosing art objects? Craig: “‘Our main consideration is the quality of the work. And we hope everything we put in goes up in value. dt usually daes. We'se had some wonderful success stories. Can sou give mean example? Craig: “te put one plece — a silkscreen — in at S00. and the last we heard a was $7500. Beckerman: Ws ing the couver Art Ciatllery now.” Van- Do most people know what thes want? Craig: Most) people know what they want.” dot He most clients trust your judg: ment? Craig: **We had one client we took in 35 pieces io and they turned back two.” What's your work philosophy? Craig: ‘Quality is the word.’” In your view, kow important is it for businesses to surround themselves with art? Beckerman: ‘“‘! think it's very important, because of the fact that they're helping the culture of the community they live in. It’s important to expose support staff to it and for clients who may not get out to the galleries. The in- vestment aspect —— it makes good financial sense, and it makes you feel good." How weil do you work together? Craig: “‘We complement cach other very well.”’ key '90 SUNDANCE $249 Down $249 Mo. Purchase $199 Mo.
