WEST VANCOUVER’s Advisory
Design Panel is recommending a
consultant be appointed to develop
a “realistic and financially viable
scheme” for the proposed civic
centre expansion to municipal hall.

The panel’s secretary, Ernie
Neale, reported that the panel
believed a study should be under-
taken to assess the future space
needs of the municipal administra-
tion.

The civic centre scheme, as pro-
posed, would involve not only the
addition of a theatre and art
gallery building, but a reorganiza-
tion of municipal hall functions.

‘The panel also recommended
that the viability and/or need for a
performing art centre for West
Vancouver District should be
carefully assessed with considera-
tion of the recently formulated
North Shore Cultural Policy.

ysis should be done on the viability

of adding the proposed fourth |

floor to the current municipal
building and building the extension
on to adjoining civic plaza.

The costs of the various propos-
ed expansions and renovations
should be determined, the panel
decided, along with the impact the
new buildings could have on traffic
and parking in the area,

The recently purchased Gertrude
Lawson house wil! be a part of the
civic complex scheme, and the
panel called for an ment of
its possible uses and relocation.

Although the idea of relocating
the Memorial Library on Marine
Drive has been raised before with
negative results, the panel sug-
gested a ‘more universal look”
should be taken at this possibility,
as it would free up the current
library site for other uses.

Public comment on the propos-
ed civic centre scheme is still being
invited at municipal hall.
