FOR THE first time in 24 years, a Lower Mainland team took first place in the Annual Workers’ Compensation Board Provincial First Aid Competitions held June 17 in Prince George. The North Shore St. Johns Am- bulance Branch team beat out seven teams, representing zones from around the province, at the 32nd annual event to bring home the first place ranking and a berth in the International First Aid Competition, which is scheduled to be held Oct. 1 in England. This is the second time the team has competed in the provincial competition. Last year it placed second, Said team coach Tory Lyttle, “We felt very confident going into the competition this year. Our team has worked hard and steady since last year and we've been steadily progressing. Our last prac- tices before Prince George were very successful and we really camie together.” The last time a Lower Mainland team won the provincial competi- tion was in 1965 when a Vancouver Police team placed first. Sn England, the St. John team will be competing against teams from Britain and Europe. Teams will be tested for their skills in diagnosis and treatment of acci- dent victims. The Workers’ Compensation Board will give the St. John team a grant of $5,000 to help cover ex- penses. Said Lyttle, ‘‘To our knowledge, we are the only team representing Canada.”’ According to Lyttle, interna- tional level competitions are dif- ferent from those in Canada. The team will therefore have to learn a completely different tech- nique of approaching first aid treatment. It will be given the op- portunity to practise international techniques at a competition in Port Hardy in August. The team will also spend two weeks prior to the international competition training with the Thames/London Police Group. The North Shore St. John team members are Richard Matthews, Linda Fehner, Sarah Rogers, Cari Glinsbockel, Patrick Monk and Tony Lyttle. The local team has been competing for five years. The team is currently looking for corporate sponsors to support the cost of getting the team to England. To heip, calf the focal Se. John Ambulance office at 984-. 3475.
