CHI 33 - Wednesday, March 29, 1989 - North Shore News Turbochargers and oil do not mix TURBOCHARGERS AND motor oils are not the best of friends. In fact, if given the opportunity, they can destroy one another. Interestingly, most of the dam- age to both engine and oil occurs not while the turbos are jetting at 120,000 rpms but, rather, after the engines are turned off. When the turbos are operating, the motor oil is constantly cir- culating around the engine, lubricating the metal bearings and keeping the engine cool. Typically, the oil flows at a rate of 4.0 litres per minute through the turbocharger unit. The turbine shaft, driven by ex- haust with a temperature of over 600°F, rotates at 120,600 rpms, or 2,000 revolutions, every second. _ At the same time, water coolant is circulated around the turbo bearings, also cooling the oil as it returns to the oil sump. Upon engine shutdown, howev- er, the oil feed pressure and flow to the engine rapidly returns to zero, leaving a thin film of oil on the hot surfaces of the tur- bocharger bearings. This film of unreplenished oil is exposed to temperatures which can exceed 600°F. Not only can these extremely hot temperatures cause motor oils to break down, but they can cause *‘coking’’ or burning of the motor oil on the bearings. Coked motor oil becomes tar- like and can block critical oil Passages, eventually destroying the lubrication-starved turbocharger, Coked motor oil also can coat the turbo bearings, hindering their ability to let the turbo rotors turn freely, which also can lead to tur- bocharger failure.
