Dear Editor: As an animal lover, the article Dog Fines Caled Excessive (North Shore News, Sept. 14} infuriated me. I question whether Ald. Stella Jo Dean understands the intent of the bylaws that the SPCA enforced when they picked up Amelia Searle’s grandson's dog Bear. I am tired of people who expound to be animal lovers yet fet their dogs run unattended. In most cases the death of a pet has been the owner’s own negligence. In addition to the danger from traffic, pets face other dangers, such as theft, poisoning, and pellet guns (not everyone likes animals). People with pets have a tremendous responsibility. The fines charged to get the dog out of the pound are certainly not ‘‘horrendous”’ given this responsibility. If some people are not able to pay the fines, which are really not so outrageous, they probably can’t afford to keep an animal in the first place. Besides, these people should be paying their share of running the SPCA, as it should not be subsidized ioo much from our taxes. Dean commented that she ‘‘does not believe dogs should run at large ...but if they’re on their own street and nobody’s complaining — you have to use your common sense.”’ People don’t complain because they have better things to do. 1 personally applaud the actions of the SPCA con- trol officer Jeff Lawson who obviously had the inter- est of Bear at heart when they picked him up. [ wish Dean did, as the city’s liaison to the Animal Welfare Committee. Norbert Greinacher North Vancouver Dogs cause children’s ills Low, low prices on blinds Serving the North Shore for 18 years. Dear Editor: Regarding the Sept. 14 issue of North Shore News, [ would sug- gest you give equal opportunity to those of us who cannot allow our children to play in parks because of the amount of dog excrement all over. I would love to see owners, dogs and children happily at play in the park if only the owners would pick up after their dog has done its business. My daughter was in terrible agony because of intestinal pro- blems the doctor said were proba- bly as a result of dog feces. He had seen six children and suggested | keep my children out of Myrtle Park, because that's where the other children seemed to have picked it up. C. Short North Vancouver Cyclist speaks up Dear Editor: Regarding Mr. E.G. Brooke's Mailbox letter Sept. 28, granted some cyclists feel they are above the law, arid there are many drivers with Mr. Brooke's attitude, perhaps many even have never ridden a bike on city streets, but let’s look at the other side as well. The times are changing and whether anyone likes it or not there will be more cyclists on the roads in the future. There are motorists on the streets who seem to feel no indication is needed when they are turning onto side streets. The cyclists have to think for themselves as well as pre-think §& 310 the intention of the driver. Then @ there are the drivers, or more so passengers, who throw open their car doors into the cyclist with the standard ‘‘I didn’t look, or see you.”” One of the biggest complaints has to be the roads. More room is needed to accommodate the rising interest in cycling. Since it is not likely that cycling is going to go away, a lot of care and attention must be taken by passengers of both two wheels and four.
